Revisiting the Genius of Dr. Manaka
Oran Kivity and Friends

We often think good treatment begins with certainty: first identify the pattern, then decide what to do. But in the tradition of Dr. Yoshio Manaka, treatment itself can be the means of discovery. The practitioner learns by engaging the body directly and paying close attention to how it responds.

In this conversation, Oran Kivity, Marian Fixler, Brenda Loew, Stephen Birch, and Paul Movsessian reflect on studying and practicing Manaka-style acupuncture. They describe an approach in which the body’s structure emerges through palpation, immediate feedback, and ongoing adjustment—not from a diagnosis fixed in advance.

This is not acupuncture as the application of a preset protocol. It is a disciplined way of paying attention: using touch as both diagnosis and treatment, testing small interventions, observing what changes, and allowing the body’s response to continually reshape one’s understanding of what is needed.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Five voices, one origin story – How friendship and experiencing gentle acupuncture pulled five practitioners from TCM toward Manaka’s system.
  • A polymath in the clinic – Manaka as surgeon, painter, linguist, and researcher, and what it meant to study under someone who treated acupuncture as one thread among many.
  • Saving tradition from itself – Japanese researchers once used clinical trials to discredit meridian acupuncture; Manaka chose to defend it from within science.
  • Borrowing physics to protect a tradition – Why Manaka reached for quantum mechanics modeling, not to explain qi away, but to give it a framework medicine could accept.
  • From handouts to a published book – The two-decade, five-author path from photocopied teaching notes to “Manaka Made Simple.”
  • A four-step map with room to wander – Root treatment, structural balancing, branch treatment, and symptom work, structured enough for beginners, loose enough to adapt to each patient.
  • Ion pumping cords and the dynamics of polarity – How a wartime burn treatment led to a tool that directs the body’s own electrical signaling.
  • The current of injury – A 19th-century discovery about the body’s response to a cut, and its possible role in why acupuncture works.
  • Points are not fixed and static – Why a millimeter’s adjustment can mean the difference between release and nothing, and what that says about locating points.
  • Teaching by demonstration, not lecture – Paul’s account of bringing hands-on practice to a culture built around passive note-taking.
  • Learning from peers, not just teachers – Why someone a few steps ahead can teach what a master no longer remembers struggling with.
  • Dosage as its own discipline – Manaka’s attention to matching stimulation to what a patient’s system can actually receive.

Don’t believe a word I say!

(Meaning: test it, observe it, reproduce it.)

Oran Kivity, Stephen Birch, Marian Fixler, Brenda Loew and Paul Movsessian

Oran Kivity, Stephen Birch, Marian Fixler, Brenda Loew and Paul Movsessian are internationally recognised practitioners, teachers and authors with decades of combined experience in Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion. Their clinical backgrounds span Manaka System Acupuncture, Toyohari, Shonishin, Sotai, moxibustion and other Japanese approaches, with teaching and research experience across Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Stephen Birch studied directly with Dr Yoshio Manaka and has been a key figure in bringing his work to the West. The other authors have each spent many years practising, teaching and developing Manaka’s methods in their own clinical fields. Together, they represent several generations of transmission and contemporary development within Japanese acupuncture, united by a shared commitment to palpation, clinical feedback, minimal stimulation and the continuing evolution of Manaka’s work.
