The History of Chinese Medicine in the West: Origins, Early Teachers, and Cultural Change

While the history of Chinese medicine spans thousands of years, its emergence, acceptance and use in Western culture has been significant since the early 1970’s.

The early adopters of acupuncture in mainstream Western culture were rebels, seekers and those with an interest in natural medicine. They were not deterred by a lack of learning resources or professional infrastructure. They translated materials from Asia, they found teachers who would teach them, they built the businesses that helped to support the emerging profession and they created the infrastructure for education, accreditation and licensure.

This page serves as an introduction guide to the people who in following their interest and passion created the acupuncture and East Asian medicine profession that we have today.

The history of Chinese medicine in the west, is a collection of the stories and recollections of the men and women who pioneered the use of acupuncture and Eastern medicine in the Western world. It is a personal look at how individual interests help to create a movement, and a profession.
