Genital Lichen Sclerosus

Juliette Aiyana

Shoptalk is Sponsored by

Genital lichen sclerosus can take away comfort, intimacy, and quality of life, leaving patients searching for lasting relief.

In this episode, we sit down with Juliette Aiyana, holistic dermatology practitioner and Chinese medicine specialist, to explore treating this challenging condition through herbal medicine. We discuss pattern differentiation, tissue repair, inflammation, and the importance of individualized treatment, alongside practical ways to protect sensitive skin.

Healing requires careful observation, patience, and integrated care—helping patients find comfort, restore function, and work toward lasting improvement.

In this Shoptalk, we discuss:

  •  Lichen sclerosus can be debilitating — Burning, tearing, scarring, and pain can severely disrupt daily life and intimacy.
  • Chinese herbs may restore damaged tissue — Juliette shares cases where treatment improved symptoms and helped repair fragile skin.
  • Don’t assume every case is damp heat — Many patients show deficiency patterns involving yin, blood, and qi.
  • Pattern differentiation is essential — Careful observation and a detailed history guide individualized herbal formulas.
  • Know the limits of treatment — Herbs may improve symptoms and progression but cannot reverse established scarring or cancer.
  • Reduce friction and irritation — Gentle hygiene, soft clothing, unscented products, and lubrication can help protect vulnerable skin.

Every visible skin condition has an invisible story. Listening closely to both is where effective treatment begins because better observation leads to better care when we match the right formula to the right person at the right time.

Juliette Aiyana, LAc., MTCM

My passion for treating dermatological conditions, allergies, and inflammatory autoimmune diseases grew after my son was born in 2008 with severe eczema and multiple life threatening food allergies. Determined to help him, I immersed myself in Chinese herbal medicine books and developed treatments for him that combined customized herbal therapy, and natural topical skincare. His eczema completely cleared, and he has since outgrown several of his previous food allergies.

That experience re-shaped the focus of my clinical practice and to complete advanced training in Chinese Herbal Dermatology and specialized training in recognizing skin diseases on richly pigmented and skin of color populations.

Since 2020, I have provided virtual consultations exclusively, making specialized Chinese herbal care available to people throughout the United States. I am a Nationally Board Certified practitioner through the NCBAHM, a New York State Licensed Acupuncturist, a teacher and an author. I earned my Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Florida Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2001. I specialize in chronic, knotty conditions.

When not working, I binge watch TV, doom scroll, spoil my son and dog, try to eat enough protein and fiber, and am a human rights activist.
