I am relatively new to acupuncture, and would like some feedback on this case.  I have a 60yo female patient who will be coming on Friday for her first acupuncture treatment.  She is currently having quite severe right sided hip pain which starts at the trochanter and radiates down the leg along the GB channel.  She has a stocky, athletic build, and, in the past was in the army, and then was a police officer.  Her gait is upright and stiff.  In conversation, she is always right, no matter what is being discussed.   She tends to be warm, and flushes easily.  She also has a habit of lightly punching people on the arm when she talks to them, if they are standing close together.  These characteristics make me think this is a GB excess case.  Do you agree?  So the treatment should be GB SG?   I have only done tonifying treatments on my patients to date, so, want to be sure that this looks like a case for draining, or diverting based on what we have been learning in this class.  Yes, I will check the abdomen and pulses before I treat, but, honestly, I do not have good skills in either of these areas, and have been going more on character and characteristics so far with Saam treatments.

I wanted to add (and couldn't figure out how to edit my post) that what is throwing me off in this case is that the patient is actually quite emotionally sensitive.  Underneath the posturing and "I am always right", she can be very thoughtful and tenderhearted, particularly toward animals and pets.

Hi Loreen,

Sorry for my late answer.

I agree with you. Your description of the patient points to treating GB SG, especially the easy flushing. Personally, I would not conclude about any specific mental-emotional treatment (in that case GB SG) because somebody is lightly punching people. Look if the Gallbladder or Liver points on the abdomen are sensibel and look if the pulse is wiry or shows some fullness at the Liv or Gb position. For the muscoskeletal problem along the GB meridian the first treatment would be Gb JG, but if you find other signs like the flushing and a overweight build you might change that to GB SG.

Best regards

Andreas
