Thanks Sharon and guests for a great presentation. Videos are such wonderful tools for discussing observation. The accuracy of observing the basic Saam diagnostic areas can make or break a diagnosis. Does anybody want to evaluate eyes for brightness and dullness?
Michael mentioned that Howard S has dull eyes. Any other opinions?
On another subject: The discussion of adding qualities we think a patient might need for enhancing performance, eg in the Olympic runner, had me thinking about stories of adverse reactions to Kidney+- abdominal pain, difficulties swallowing- and GB+- erratic behavior, out bursts of anger. Having abdominal cramps or inciting erratic behavior could certainly diminish performance. We really want see an imbalance between the channel pairs before treating. Is it possible that our seemingly K excess Olympic runner could become relatively SI excess from overtraining and would benefit from K+? For sure. But we want to see those SI signs pile up and overwhelm her Kidney signs and symptoms before we jump to conclusions. I appreciate this presentation's spirit of play and conjecture but just want to add my 2 cents about this.
A few times speakers in the presentation mentioned not wanting to mess with a patients's superpowers. Just a reminder that when we supplement the counterbalancer, we are in no way diminishing the superpower of the relative excess. We are just making it healthier, more integrated and more sustainable by providing counterbalancing support.

Hi Kristin,
A couple of us in the chat felt Howard's eyes flashed piercingly bright when he looked directly at the interviewer, which he did only sparingly, in keeping with the content of his conversation & a strong SJ nature. Combined with his regular reliance on sunglasses and the hair behind which he "hides," I think his eyes are a gem for SJ Excess, but I'd love to hear what stood out for you. 🙂
@sdrocklinaol-com Hi Shana, Yes! I saw those bright flashes too. And I saw that he diverted his eyes most of the time. Based on the bright flashes and knowing how he is an open book on his show, it is easy to see his hair and sunglasses as attempts to shield.
The anger and disgust he expresses when talking about his appearance is also a pointer to SJ excess, though it could also be SI excess too. When talking to Toby about how to differentiate SI low self esteem from SJ anger at oneself, Toby highlighted that SI excess lacks the real anger at oneself that SJ excess can have. He said it is possible for someone to be Kidney excess and SJ excess and still be angry at onself. We can also look at other signs and symptoms to determine where the relative excesses are. For me, if someone was angry at themselves but were clearly Liver excess, I would avoid supplementing their Liver.
As for Jackie Gleason's eyes: Andreas called them "sad". Where would you place them on the bright/dull scale?
Jack Nicholson's eyes and the waitress' too .... Anyone game?
I'll bite. This is fun. 🙂
To me Jackie Gleason's eyes seem to be a good example of clear, extremely light eyes which are also quite dull. However, the questioner is asking him to go internal, into his own somewhat painful past, likely one from which he has needed to shield himself, so maybe that has an effect? If he were gazing outward, perhaps upon a beloved grandchild and beholding all the magic present there-in, would the dullness brighten? I'm not sure, but I wonder....
I'm less confident about Jack Nicholson: his eyes seem cold and flat to me, so dullish? The waitress' eyes are slightly more expressive as the exchange preceeds. So maybe dull at first then brightening a bit as she finally more clearly "sees" the customer with whom she is dealing?
Such an interesting dynamic w/ Howard Stern. Thanks for your insights there. I don't know him well, but sought him out after this presentation on the Netflix show "Comedians w/ Cars Getting Coffee" with Jerry Seinfield and Stern repeated some of the same schtick about his appearance and going out into public. He actually goes to great lengths to have his hair styled inorder to look his best.
Looking forward to your thoughts & insights around these other eyes!
Thanks for playing Shana! <To me Jackie Gleason's eyes seem to be a good example of clear, extremely light eyes which are also quite dull.> So incredibly dull. I get where you are going with your conjectures but with eyes this dull I don't have much hope that he could bring SJ brightness to his grandchild. That doesn't mean that his beloved grandchild wouldn't receive lots of Heart warmth and probably lots of gifts.
Maybe this was already in the class chat, but the extravagant gift giving could be an expression of Lung excess (he has the resources to be extravagant) and Heart love for others.
Jack and the waitress were both on the dull side to me, not as dull as Jackie's however. Jack's might have had a brighter flash or 2 that briefly brought him close to neutral or very low bright. Yes to the cold- there was no warm smile adding to my perception of brightness in those eyes. I'd have to look at the waitress again to check my evaluation off yours. Anyhow, I wouldn't be supplementing Liver for either of them.
Howard has such a mix of SI and Kidney qualities. Physically not attractive but yet he seeks the limelight (on radio mostly), works on grooming but criticizes his own appearance (seems honest) and at least had a history of being hypersexual.
I really appreciate this point. However as I ponder upon it more, I get more confused. If someone's superpower is SJ excess and if we tonify LV to the point it becomes more excess than their SJ, wouldn't their SJ prowess than become diminished or masked? Please give me a little help me thinking this through. Thanks.
@user54fef02e Hi Maria,
<If someone's superpower is SJ excess and if we tonify LV to the point it becomes more excess than their SJ, wouldn't their SJ prowess than become diminished or masked?> Yes. I've overtreated myself with Liver and my SJ bright outer focus was definitely diminished especially in the first 2 days after treatment but it lessened as my system metabolized the Liver+ input. This can also happen with seasonal influences. In summer a patient might need Liv+ and in the middle of winter they benefit from SJ+ and then next spring/summer they need Liv+ again.
But the SJ qualities aren't drained by the Liver+ input. Masked is the cleaner way to describe what happens.
